About Dr. Roberta Kalafut

An alumna of Youngstown State University, Dr. Roberta Kalafut has experienced considerable success since obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Upon graduating, Dr. Roberta Kalafut went on to attend Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, from which she earned her Doctor of Osteopathy. Dr. Roberta Kalafut entered the Interinstitutional Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Sinai Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Showing an early promise for leadership, Dr. Roberta Kalafut was appointed Chief Resident of the program by the hospital administration, where she led other residents within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program.


In 1989, Dr. Roberta Kalafut obtained her board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Taking on the position of Medical Director at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Roberta Kalafut began a long and successful career as a leader in her field. Over the course of her professional career, Dr. Roberta Kalafut held instrumental roles with the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, the Children’s Hospital of Baltimore, the Hendrick Center for Rehabilitation, the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, and the Abilene Regional Medical Center.


In addition to her leading positions in various hospitals and clinics, Dr. Roberta Kalafut has played an integral part in numerous professional organizations. The first woman to hold the position of President of the Texas Medical Board, Dr. Roberta Kalafut also served as an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a Board Member for First Care, a Committee Member for the Texas Workers Compensation Commission, a Committee Member for the Federation of State Medical Boards, and a Board Member for the Texas Medical Board. Currently, Dr. Roberta Kalafut maintains memberships in the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Texas Pain Society, and the Taylor-Jones-Haskell County Medical Society.


Most recently, Dr. Roberta Kalafut was asked by the Federation of State Medical Boards to participate in the fourth annual United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) item-writing workshop for members of state medical boards. The workshop is hosted by the two parent organizations of the USMLE—the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).


Dr. Roberta Kalafut operates as a Physician Partner at SpineAbilene, a clinic she founded with her husband in 1998. In this capacity, Dr. Roberta Kalafut assists the denizens of Abilene, Texas, in receiving state-of-the-art treatment for back and neck pain. Dr. Roberta Kalafut specializes in noninvasive treatments, including physical therapy, spinal injections, and various other nonsurgical options.


When she is not working, Dr. Roberta Kalafut enjoys outdoor activities, such as scuba diving and gardening. As a Master Gardener, Dr. Roberta Kalafut is a member of a huge network of horticulture enthusiasts dedicated to educating the public on sustainable landscape practices.
